Explanation of "Best" and "Worst" Cases:

  • Best Case: The tow vehicle has ample towing capacity, horsepower, and braking power to handle the trailer comfortably, even in challenging conditions (hills, wind). The towing experience is stable and controlled.

  • Worst Case: The tow vehicle is at or near its maximum towing capacity, making for a less stable and potentially unsafe towing experience. Performance may be significantly reduced, especially on inclines. Trailer sway and poor handling are more likely.

Key Considerations Not Included in the Chart:

  • Payload Capacity: This is the maximum weight the tow vehicle can carry (passengers, cargo, tongue weight). It's crucial not to exceed this.

  • Tongue Weight: The downward force exerted by the trailer tongue on the hitch. It should be 10-15% of the trailer's loaded weight.

  • Axle Ratios: Lower (higher numerically) axle ratios provide better towing performance but may reduce fuel economy when not towing.

  • Engine Type: Diesel engines generally offer better towing performance than gasoline engines due to higher torque.

  • ST (Special Trailer) Tires: Specifically designed for trailers, offering stiff sidewalls to reduce sway.

    • Always use tires rated for the trailer's weight class and size for optimal performance and safety.

    • Check tire pressure and condition regularly, especially during long trips or in hot weather.

**This chart provides a general guideline. Always prioritize safety and consult professionals if you have any doubts about your towing setup.
