What is a Tow Package?

A tow package is a set of upgrades and equipment installed on a vehicle to make it better suited for towing trailers or other heavy loads. It essentially beefs up the vehicle's capabilities to handle the extra stress and weight associated with towing.

• Hitch Receiver: This is the most visible part of the tow package. It's a square tube that's mounted to the vehicle's frame and provides a connection point for the trailer hitch.

• Wiring Harness: This provides electrical connections for the trailer's lights (brake lights, turn signals, running lights) and, in some cases, for trailer brakes.   

• Cooling System Upgrades: Towing puts extra strain on the engine and transmission, generating more heat. A tow package often includes a larger radiator, transmission cooler, and/or engine oil cooler to help dissipate this heat and prevent overheating.

• Suspension Upgrades: Heavier-duty springs, shocks, or sway bars may be included to improve stability and handling when towing.   

• Brake Upgrades: Some tow packages include larger brakes or upgraded brake pads to provide increased stopping power.

• Higher-Capacity Battery and Alternator: These provide more electrical power to support the additional electrical demands of towing.

• Towing Mirrors: Some packages might include extendable towing mirrors for better visibility behind the trailer.   

• Trailer Brake Controller Wiring: This pre-wiring makes it easier to install an aftermarket trailer brake controller, which is necessary for trailers with electric brakes.

Why are tow packages important?

• Safety: Towing without the proper equipment can be dangerous, leading to poor handling, brake failure, or even trailer separation. A tow package helps ensure a safer towing experience.   

• Performance: A tow package improves the vehicle's ability to handle the extra weight of a trailer, providing better acceleration, braking, and stability.

• Warranty: Towing beyond a vehicle's rated capacity without a proper tow package can void the warranty.

Not all tow packages are created equal. The specific components included can vary depending on the vehicle manufacturer and model. Some basic packages may only include a hitch and wiring, while more comprehensive packages include all of the upgrades listed above.
